The commentary below was posted by Terri K on the Stitcher's Guild forum.
It does not reflect my views one way or the other. I'm an administrator on the Stitcher's Guild forum and am just moving Terri's comments to this site which is more geared to strong political points of view and where the discussion can carry forward.
So carry on!
Kathryn

The Washington Post reports that Palin's Staffers Keep Her Away From The News To Avoid Being "Depressed" This board has become an increasingly absurd place when a topic on Making Sure your Vote Counts get shut down because some Canadian, who can't even vote in our elections, disparages me for posting links responding to questions with factual information about what is happening regarding serial suppression of certain voters (2000, 2004 and 2008) and a link to just one of the many videos of McCain/Palin rallies that openly encourage fear and hate of the opponent by repeating disinformation and lies. It's well known that if you have no substance, experience, ideas, or qualities that you can expand to make voters feel that you are the candidate who is the best qualified to handle the difficult situation they are in, you can always use the proven techniques of Joseph Goebbels and his teacher, Edward Bernays to create and perpetuate an environment of pure hate, using disinformation and fear. If you've never heard those two names, I suggest that you Google Joseph Goebbels, Edward Bernays, Hitler and propaganda to educate yourself about a time and place where, with his help, Goebbels' boss incited the population of a country in deep economic trouble (Germany 1933) using fear, lies and hate to blame people who of different religions or ethnic background for their problems, making himself the "Savior" they were desperately seeking. Distraction from the real issues works on uneducated people, but then take that to a new level and burn the books and control the population's access to the facts, so you can make up what you want them to believe is the truth. “If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.” Joseph Goebbels I wish all of you and MY country the best.

The topic wasn't shut down because of any one post. It was shut because of the divisive nature of the whole discussion. SG is focused on what makes us the same, not on what makes us different.
That said, I agree with you to some extent. I believe all too often we take mediocre candidates who "clean up good", put 'em in fancy suits, airbrush out their misdeeds and dumber moments, and package the whole thing to look like a good idea. It's mass marketing turned evil.
Distraction from the real issues works on uneducated people, Don't you think the internet is changing that? People of all education levels are going online in ever-larger numbers and finding themselves inundated with information and learning -at least, I hope- to make much better decisions because they have so many more facts at their fingertips. ?
