Thanks for the concern, Dart.  But so far all is well enough.

As for the kittens, honestly, I think Dad is probably better off with them than he would be without them.  You won't see him knitting any little kitty sweaters, but he will always be mindful of their welfare.  And as long as he has to provide for them, he'll do a better job taking care of himself.

I saw them again this morning, and all were fine.

We also made plans to start a joint checking account.  I was amazed he agreed, but he thought it was a great idea.  That way, I can monitor his spending and help keep his finances straight.  I also plan to kinda slyly have them set up a seperate savings to both set some money aside every month and give him some overdraft protection, since he lost more in overdraft charges last month than he spent.  Maybe I'll tell him something, and just have it automatically deducted at the beginning of the month, and automatically replaced at the end of it.

Glad to hear that the kittens are doing OK and doubly glad that they can act as a good influence on your dad's actions.
Good luck with the finances and your dad's handling of his money situation; I KNOW how those overdraft fees can add up.  Could he operate on a cash-only basis?
Strength and patience to you.

Hi DL - glad that you've got a plan moving.  We had mom sign over power of attorney while she was still capable of understanding what she was doing.  I'm guessing your dad won't be willing to go that far but letting you help manage his money is a good start.

I can only imagine how scary it is to have him out there by himself.  I keep picturing Mom in a similar situation and well... yikes.  Please be sure you're taking care of you during all of this.  I know that the stress just wears you down when you aren't even aware of how badly it affects you.
